Challah Recipe with Israeli Flour!

Enjoy traditional braided Challah bread made from Organic Israel flour and other amazing ingredients from the Land!

 Yield: 2 Loaves

Ingredients

1½ packages active dry yeast (about 3½ teaspoons)

1 tablespoon + ½ cup sweetener (honey or sugar) 

Use Israeli honey!

½ Cup Vegetable Oil, more for greasing bowl 

Use Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Israel!

5 Large Eggs

1 Tablespoon Salt

8 to 8½ cups all-purpose flour (approx. 1 kg) 

Use Organic Israeli Flour!

Seeds for sprinkling on

Optional: Za'atar Spice from Israel

 
Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast and 1 tablespoon sugar or honey in 1¾ cups lukewarm water.
  2. Whisk oil into yeast mixture, then beat in 4 eggs, one at a time, with remaining sugar/honey and salt. Gradually add flour. When the dough holds together, it is ready for kneading. (You can also use a mixer with a dough hook for both mixing and kneading.)
  3. Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth. Grease bowl then return dough to bowl. Cover the bowl, and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  4. Divide the dough into eight equal portions, and braid it, four strands per loaf.
  5. Let it rise for another hour.
  6. Beat the remaining egg and brush on loaves - sprinkle with seeds
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F 
  8. Bake in middle of oven for about 35 minutes, or until golden brown.
