Community in Focus: Elon Moreh

Where is one of the most amazing places to see the sunrise? In the land of Israel! And where in Israel is one of the most amazing places to see the sunrise? I would have to say, the community of "Elon Moreh." Elon Moreh is the northernmost community in Samaria, 792 meters above sea level. Looking toward the South

The modern community was established in 1980, one of the first in Samaria. Looking to the Northwest from Mt. Kabir, one can see the community of Elon Moreh on the left, and in the distance, the outskirts of Shechem. The biblical significance of this place—in addition to the natural beauty—is why seeing the sunrise there is so amazing. In Genesis 12 we read the story, “So they came to the land of Canaan. Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh.”

The modern community of Elon Moreh

Abram stayed at the Oak of Moreh and God spoke to him there and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” Seeing the sun rising over the re-settled mountains of Israel, makes one realize God’s faithfulness to His word. Jeremiah 31 tells us, “Thus says the Lord, Who gives the sun for a light by day…If those ordinances depart from before Me, says the Lord, then the seed of Israel shall also cease from being a nation before Me forever.”

Today the sun is still rising over the land of Israel showing us His faithfulness to the covenant He made with Abraham so many years ago.
